Choosing the right chandelier size is the single biggest factor in whether a room feels balanced. Too small and it disappears; too large and it overwhelms. Here's a simple guide to sizing a chandelier for any room, plus how high to hang it.
The room-size formula
Add the length and width of your room in feet. The total is roughly the ideal chandelier diameter in inches. For example, a 12 × 14 ft dining room: 12 + 14 = 26, so look for a chandelier about 26 inches wide.
What size chandelier for a dining table?
Over a dining table, the table matters more than the room. Choose a chandelier that is one-half to two-thirds the width of your table, and keep at least 6 inches between the edge of the fixture and the edge of the table on each side.
- 36–42 in round table: 20–26 in chandelier
- 48–60 in round table: 26–36 in chandelier
- Long rectangular table (72–96 in): a linear chandelier about one-half to two-thirds the table length, or two matching pendants
How high to hang a chandelier over a dining table
Hang the bottom of the chandelier 30–36 inches above the tabletop on an 8 ft ceiling. Add about 3 inches for every additional foot of ceiling height.
Entryway and foyer chandeliers
In an entry, the bottom of the chandelier should be at least 7 ft above the floor. In a two-story foyer, center it with an upstairs window so it can be seen from outside. Use the room-size formula and size up slightly for tall ceilings.
Kitchen island lighting
For island pendants or a linear island chandelier, hang them 30–36 inches above the countertop. Leave about 24–30 inches between pendants, and keep 6 inches from each end of the island.
Bedrooms and living rooms
Use the room-size formula. In living rooms with 8 ft ceilings, a semi-flush or flush mount keeps clearance; reserve hanging chandeliers for ceilings 9 ft and higher.
