Whether you're redoing a powder room or a primary bath, the right bathroom vanity size depends on your wall space, plumbing and how much storage you need. Here's how to choose.
Standard bathroom vanity sizes
- 16–24 in: powder rooms and small half baths
- 30 in: small full bathrooms and guest baths
- 36 in: the most popular size for hall and guest bathrooms
- 48 in: primary bathrooms with one sink and plenty of counter space
- 60–72 in: primary bathrooms with double sinks
How to measure for a new vanity
- Measure the wall width and subtract at least 1–2 inches on each side (more if next to a tub or shower door).
- Measure the depth: standard vanities are about 21 in deep; choose 18 in or less for tight spaces.
- Note where your water supply and drain pipes come out of the wall so the cabinet and sink line up.
- Check door swing and walkway clearance; leave about 30 in of clear floor space in front of the vanity.
Floating vs. freestanding vanities
Floating (wall-mounted) vanities make a small bathroom feel larger and are easy to clean under. Freestanding vanities look like furniture and offer more storage. Floating vanities need a solid wall to anchor into.
Vanity height
Most vanities are 32–36 in tall with the top. Comfort height (about 36 in) is popular for primary baths; vessel sinks add 4–6 in, so pair them with a shorter cabinet.
Choosing a mirror and lighting
Choose a mirror a few inches narrower than the vanity, and mount sconces at roughly eye level (60–66 in from the floor) on either side of the mirror, or a vanity light bar above it.
